Thinning hair can bring about a lot of stress. You may not be sure why your hair is experiencing thinning and shedding and whether it’s the result of hormonal shifts that happen during pregnancy and menopause, genetics, or even intense stress or medications that you are taking. As you are navigating your journey with thinning hair, or just making peace with the changes that are normal for us and happen to us all, you still want a hairstyle and haircut that look amazing in the here and now.

It can seem like there’s a shortage of those haircuts for thinning hair, but that isn’t true. While flat-ironed straight hair that’s past your back may not be the best look for thinner hair and you might benefit from losing some length, the solution doesn’t have to be to chop off your hair entirely. Finding the ideal style is all about choosing a shape that creates texture in your hair and gives you lift and body without forcing you to spend hours styling your hair in the morning.

Here are three haircuts that are great on thinning hair because they give the illusion of fuller, thicker hair.

1. Layered Lob

If you’re stuck between long hair and very short hair and can’t bring yourself to make that drastic cut, consider a lob — the perfect chin-length cut — and add layers for movement. A lob works well on thinning hair because it removes ends that can become stringy when they are too long. Keeping these ends blunt can help increase the illusion of thickness even more. From there, adding long layers around your crown gives your hair an instant lift and buoyancy. “Ghost layers” that aren’t obvious or choppy, but create more bulk on top, can also be extremely flattering.

2. Layered Bob

For some of us, a layered lob is too long to do our hair and its texture justice. If you find a lob leaves your hair looking stringy, or you just prefer shorter, chic hair, the layered bob is an amazing choice for thinning hair. This haircut stops at or around the chin and features tousled layers that give it a fuller finish.

3. Curtain Bangs

Curtain bangs offer more variety and less commitment than traditional bangs. You don’t necessarily have to wear them straight down, but can part them down the middle or sweep them to the side. They add volume and movement to the crown of your hair, and if you are experiencing shedding and thinning in the front, they can give the illusion of having more hair in this area. These bangs are longer and more angled than traditional blunt bangs so that they blend into the rest of the layers in your hair and can frame your face. Give them a try, especially if you want to make a change, but don’t want to cut off too much hair or go for a drastic snip.
