Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have proceeded to the next stage in their case against the Mail/Associated Newspapers. The Duchess of Sussex is suing them for breach of privacy.
Meghan and Prince Harry filed the suit in October of last year in response to the publication of a private letter from Meghan to her estranged father Thomas Markle, a 75-year-old retired lighting director. Thomas Markle claims that Meghan had cut him off after marrying into the royal family and that he had no way of reaching her.
The publication of Meghan’s private letter was Thomas’ defense against allegations made by Meghan’s friends. Her friends told People magazine that “He knows how to get in touch with her… He’s never called; he’s never texted. It’s super painful.” Three months after Meghan and Prince Harry’s wedding, Meghan wrote Thomas telling him of the hurt and pain that he had caused her “by making the choice to not tell the truth.” Thomas Markle denies that Meghan and Harry ever tried to contact him.
Recently revealed court documents show that Harry and Meghan did reach out to Thomas and urged him to call them in the days leading to the wedding. In a series of text exchanges between the couple and Thomas, it shows that both Meghan and Harry attempted to reach out to Thomas after he was exposed staging photographs with paparazzi.
The couple claims that the Mail/Associated Newspapers had “harassed, humiliated, manipulated and exploited” Meghan. The couple have been frequent targets of the tabloid press and are fed up with the way their reporting style pulls apart the lives of many individuals. The lawsuit is just getting started and there’s sure to be more revealing details in the months to come.
