The new Netflix documentary Becoming follows Michelle Obama on her book tour, and it also gives audiences a peak into more of her personal life. Specifically, one surprising friendship that stood out in the film was between her former First Lady and Allen Taylor, her Secret Service agent.
After over ten years of working together, the two have become like family.

The film, which premiered on May 6, even touches on the story behind this photograph of the two going down a slide at the Great Wall of China.
Taylor explains, "It had been planned out that the girls would have the ability to take the slide down...[W]hen Mrs. Obama saw the slide, she became interested in wanting to do it as well. As you can see, she’s smiling and I’m not smiling. But obviously it’s a very special photo."
In the film, the former First Lady talks about the agent warmly.
She explains, "Allen is more like a brother than he is an agent. He was my first experience of having a detail — so that’s 12 years of a relationship, if not more."
Their friendship is evident throughout the documentary. As Taylor drives and Obama sits in the backseat, she quips that she has "spent a lot of time looking at the back of his head."
Allen also commented on their friendship, describing his duty as a "no-fail mission."
He explained, "I’ve been working with Mrs. Obama since 2008. Over that time, if you’re around the protectee, you get to know each other very well. The stakes are very high in this job, it’s a no-fail mission, so you have to get it right 100 percent of the time."
