As royals, Meghan and Harry’s living and security expenses were covered partially by money from the royal family and partially from public funds. They did not earn a salary. The couple had plans to start a nonprofit foundation and seek employment and/or sponsorships given their celebrity status.
Then the coronavirus pandemic hit. Now, the couple, like many in the world, are caught in limbo. Due to social distancing requirements, neither Meghan nor Harry can work. They are in quarantine like the rest of California.
“Security is not cheap,” says CTV anchor Elaine Lui,” For them, you are dealing with multiple personnel and round-the-clock at that. You have to also account for that and travel and other expenses.”
So far the couple has been paying for their own security, presumably with some personal savings and Harry’s inheritance. Last month, Meghan and Harry revealed the name of their charitable foundation to be Archewell. So, they do have things in the works. Until the pandemic is resolved, there’s no telling what the near future will bring.
