Prince William and Kate Middleton may be one of the world’s favorite couples now, but the royal duo’s early relationship certainly had a rocky start.
New reports reveal that William almost never made it to the altar with Kate at all. Early on, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had actually broken up after a few years of dating when William briefly ended things with Kate in the most shocking way.
Get this– at a time way before their now nine years of marriage and three kids, William broke up with Kate via a phone call in 2007. Yikes!
As reported by Us Weekly, royal historian Robert Lacey’s new book Battle of Brothers, highlights details of William and Kate’s once uncertain relationship back in 2007. Lacey writes about April 11, 2007 when William was 25 years old and Kate was working as an accessories buyer for Jigsaw when she got the call from William that flipped her world upside down.
“Kate excused herself from a meeting at Jigsaw, the fashion store with which she’d recently started working, to take a call from William in a room out of earshot of the other buyers,” an excerpt from the book revealed. “She shut the door for more than an hour. When she came out, she was single.”
Thankfully, there are no hard feelings between the happily married couple now.
The duo was most recently spotted out in public enjoying time together on Oct. 20. As PEOPLE reports, William and Kate were in London to meet finalists of Kate’s Hold Still photo project, a community project aimed to create a collective portrait of the United Kingdom during the COVID-19 lockdown.
