This Is How To Find The Best Lipstick For Your Skin Tone, Once And For All

June 13, 2017 by Lisa Cupido

There's a whole lot of trial and error involved when purchasing lip stick shades — and, unfortunately, all of that experimenting can lead to spending a great deal more money on lipsticks than necessary! The most important thing to figure out before shopping for lip shades is what, exactly, is your skin tone type. You can always rely on the expertise of a Sephora or MAC store professional, or simply hold up a white sheet of paper against your face, check out your reflection in a mirror, and notice which facial undertones the white paper produces. If you appear yellow against the paper, you have a warm skin tone. If your skin looks pink or ruddy, you're a cool skin type. And if your face looks greyish, your skin likely is olive with a neutral undertone.

Now, onto the fun part — finally figuring out which lip shades work best for your skin type.

Cool Skin Tones

If you have cool undertones in your skin, there's a good chance you're fair and burn easily in the sun, have light eyes, and maybe even freckles. The most flattering shades of lipstick on you are those with blue and purple undertones that aren't too orange — a shade that can bring out the redness in your complexion. Have fun with bold fuchsia, berry-red, soft mauve, and the brightest blue-based red lipstick you can find.

Warm Skin Tones

Warm skin tones that look better in gold jewelry than silver appear positively radiant in hues like orange-red, bright tangerine, warm burgundy, and golden browns and nudes. Count yourself lucky: thanks to your warm skin, you can pull off deep berry tones and even dark and dramatic purple shades.

Neutral Or Olive Skin Tones

If your skin tone is neutral you might have trouble figuring out your undertones and probably look amazing in both silver and gold jewelry. Play up your natural medium or olive skin tone with lip shades like nude pink, bright orange or coral, warm berry, or even a deep wine. The good news, if you have neutral undertones, is that almost anything goes in terms of lip shades — most will look stunning on your skin.
