While people are staying home during quarantine, they may be tempted to switch up their skincare routine, creating a more complex regime to take care of their skin. Face masks and multi-step routines are both popular ways people are practicing “self-care” during this time. However, some changes might be doing more harm than good.

Adding Too Many Products

If you are adding more and more products to your routine in an effort to improve your complexion, it's time to take a step back.

Dr. Kathleen Suozzi, an assistant professor of dermatology at the Yale School of Medicine, explained how you can use this time to give your skin a break. She told Insider, "Give your skin what I call a product holiday, where you strip it down to a gentler, simpler routine."

Instead, implementing a simple routine everyday can be much more effective.

She continues, "It's also a good time to think about correction. When our lives are busy, we forget to stick to a regimen every day."

With that in mind, it's a bad idea to go overboard with your skincare routine. Over-exfoliating and using face masks (skincare, not protective gear) too often can hurt the overall health of your skin.

Instead, using this time to skip everyday makeup and focusing on the basics like a gentle face wash, moisturizer, and sunscreen is a smart way to take care of your skin throughout quarantine.
