Just like contour can give you the cheekbones you wish you had, eyeliner has its own face-sculpting tricks. If you’ve been sticking to a basic cat eye, or leaving eyeliner out of your makeup routine entirely, it might be time to rethink that.
We asked a makeup artist to share her eyeliner hacks that can easily make you look 10 years younger!
Makeup Artist, Saffron Hughes shared some super simple yet super effective tips for how to use eyeliner in ways that don’t only look great, but also can take 10 years off your face!
“Eyeliner is a versatile makeup product that can be worn on your eyelid, waterline, lower lash line- all three! Different styles can help to achieve different looks and enhance the eye shape. Depending on personal taste and age, you may want your eyeliner to make you look more youthful and doe eyed.”
To achieve a younger look, Hughes recommends using champagne eyeliner rather than the go-to white pencil. “You may have heard the trick to apply white pencil eyeliner to your waterline to brighten your eyes and make them look younger. However, this can look unnatural and too retro. Instead, opt for a champagne shade or nude eyeliner on the waterline. This will achieve a wider, brighter look as opposed to darker colors like black or brown, that may make you look older and more tired.”
If you saw Lauren Conrad on The Hills in the mid-2000s and have forever copied her cat eye since, we’ve got some tips for you, too.
Hughes explains: “If you’re working with liquid eyeliner on the eyelid, you don’t want to draw a straight line when your eyes are closed. Instead, take your time and apply the eyeliner when your eyes are open, angling the liner slightly up on the ends to “lift” fallen lids… When it comes to styles of eyeliner, avoid a thick line and cat eyeliner, as both techniques can make you look older. If the eyeliner is too thick, it could accentuate fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes.”
And for a softer alternative to the traditional black liquid liner cat eye, Hughes recommends using brown eyeshadow.
“You can create a similar effect with eyeshadow too. Taking a brown eyeshadow for contouring, follow your crease and flick it outwards for a blended, lifted wing effect. This adds depth to your eyes without dragging them downwards, which can make you look older.” She suggests finishing any look off with mascara to lift your eyelashes and create an awake, youthful look.
