Does The TikTok Blush Trick Actually Make Your Eyes Look Younger? We Investigate

One of the best things about TikTok is that you can literally find all kinds of content on the app. You’ve got basic life hacks, dance challenges, product reviews, easy recipes, and more. In fact, if you love all things beauty and are searching for makeup tutorials or hairstyle inspo for your next look, TikTok has videos about those too. And lately, we came across one makeup trend that’s been going viral on our #fyp.

Disclaimer: there’s actually no official name for this trend. For now, we’ll just refer to it as the “blush trick.” And if you watch the original video by TikTok user @paintedbyspencer, you’ll notice that it involves blending your blush up to your under eye area, as compared to just applying it on your cheekbones. Some content creators showed that they start off by putting blush on the center of their under eye, and then continue by applying concealer on the same spot. After blending, the final step is patting it off with setting powder.

As it aims to lift your face and make your eyes look younger, we checked in with experts to see what they really think about this makeup hack. Is it actually effective? More importantly, could it have the same results on mature skin? Keep reading for helpful insight from professional makeup artists Lynn Simpson, Margina Dennis, Natasha Moor, and Mandie Brice.

“I do love this easy makeup hack,” says Simpson. “This is a quick and easy way to color correct and conceal under eye circles while giving a glow from within color that is subtle and can be enhanced with your regular blush application afterwards.”

She clarifies though, that for this hack it’s best to use a coral or peachy toned blush. Simpson notes, “This is the best color to color correct most skin tones under circles. If your blush is too pink, it can make your eyes look redder, which would not be a great look.” Another pro tip from Simpson is to avoid blush that is very sparkly. “A little shimmer for sheen is okay, [but if it’s too glittery] it will look a little off under the eyes,” she explains.

If your skin is quite mature already, don’t worry. Simpson believes this look is still worth a try. “The key is to stick with more [liquid] formulas that aren’t too cakey or dry to avoid the makeup settling into fine lines under the eyes. Set with a light translucent powder and use a cream or liquid blush for this look for easy blending.”

Dennis agrees, too. “If you don’t overdo it on the blush, it can act as [a color corrector] or a neutralizer under the eye when mixed with concealer and result in a more natural looking under eye area,” she shares.

Moor also thinks this is a “fabulous little hack.” She adds, “I love the trend, primarily because it provides TikTokers with fun content to recreate. Plus, of course, makeup play time is always fun.” However, she emphasizes that “the core reason to use a blush with a pink/coral tone is to cancel our colors in our skin before applying concealer.” Moor says, “While it’s fun to experiment with makeup, if your primary reason for doing this is to conceal dark circles and/or to give a more youthful appearance, I recommend using a corrector that was formulated specifically for that purpose. The consistency and formula of a corrector is made especially for the under eye area and will enable you to get the best possible outcome when concealing with a smooth, invisible finish.”

According to Brice, “While I see the appeal and the fresh look it gives, I’d generally caution people to use products that were intended for the specific areas they were created for. If you’re dying to do this trend, a pink cream eyeshadow would be a much safer choice than putting blush that close to your eyes.” She warns, “There are products that are formulated specifically for your eyes, [and] blush could have shimmer or other ingredients that are less safe for such a delicate area.”

In Brice’s opinion, this makeup trend would likely be “more effective for younger folks.” She mentions, “As we age, our skin thins, and more capillaries become visible. This is especially true in the under eye area, where our skin is thinnest to begin with. Adding red to that area seems like it would likely just make that even more extreme.”

But overall, Brice clarifies, “I strongly believe that make up is a form of self expression, so if you want to give it a shot, go for it. Just do it safely! Makeup is definitely not one size fits all, and it might look lovely on someone, even of a certain age!”

Perhaps this is the universe telling you to try something new. How about putting on this look for your next date night or for when you go out with your girlfriends? Don’t be afraid to give it a go. You’ll never know what kind of result you might just end up with!
