You may have noticed your iPhone battery is refusing to hold its charge for longer than a few hours at a time. Ideally, your device will carry you throughout the day, but if something is preventing that from happening, it may be time to put a few simple tips into place. Tech Expert Aimee White, the co-owner of Keyboard Kings, says there are ways to prolong your phone’s battery that won’t cost a cent — and won’t take up precious time. Here are five simple tips for making your iPhone battery last so much longer.

1. Turn off Bluetooth

For starters, Bluetooth uses a surprising amount of battery life, according to White, as as a result of this, when you don’t need your Bluetooth on, you should remember to turn it off. “While it is useful to have on in general, it’s typically not needed when you’re trying to conserve your battery life,” White says.

2. Utilize Airplane mode

If you haven’t been making use of Airplane mode, you’re in for a surprising treat: it can save your phone so much battery power. “If you don’t need to use your phone to make calls or texts, then popping your phone into airplane mode can significantly prolong the battery life,” White says. “In addition to this, it also makes your phone charge faster, too. You can still use Wi-Fi when your phone is in airplane mode, which allows you to access the majority of the features on your phone.”

3. Close Apps

“If you have finished using an app, instead of minimizing it, you should always close it completely,” White reminds me. “This will help to conserve your battery life because your phone isn’t working as hard when it comes to multitasking.”

4. Turn off background app refreshing

A lot of apps will automatically refresh in the background when you are on your phone — and this is especially true for social media apps. “This can impact your battery life,” White says. “As a result, I would recommend turning off your background app refreshing. This is simple to access within your phone’s settings.”

5. Turn down screen brightness

“Where possible, turning down the brightness of your screen will help to conserve the phone’s battery,” White says. “It’s surprising how much power the screen uses. In the majority of cases, you don’t need to use the maximum screen brightness to see the screen clearly.”

These five simple tips — in addition to remembering to charge your phone in smaller bursts rather than overnight — will help extend your battery life and keep your device in better shape.
