As COVID-19 restrictions start to loosen in certain parts of the country, many stores have reopened their doors, including TJ Maxx. However, pictures on social media soon surfaced of TJ Maxx shoppers ignoring many coronavirus safety guidelines.

In many of the photos, the crowds seem to be ignoring social distancing protocols with many shoppers not wearing masks either.

Ernie Herrman, the CEO of TJX holdings, had first closed the stores on March 19. Online business has also been restricted.

Since then, as certain states and counties allow nonessential businesses to reopen, TJ Maxx has started to welcome customers again.

In a memo, Herrman explains how the stores have responded to COVID-19: "For our Associates, we are following newly established health protocols, including required use of face masks while working and implementing social distancing work practices."

Additionally, there have been updates to the stores themselves.

"In our stores, we have installed protective shields at cash registers, added social distancing markers in our queue lines, implemented new processes for handling merchandise returns, and instituted new cleaning regimens, including enhanced cleaning of high-touch surfaces throughout the day," he explained.

The memo also encourages customers to wear masks: "We care deeply about the health and well-being of our valued Associates and customers, and for this reason, expect all customers who shop in our stores to wear a face covering."

Despite this expectation, it seems that many customers opted to skip their face masks.
