What you eat is just as important for your skin as your skincare routine. Incorporating healthy whole foods into your diet can help support a more youthful appearance. On the other hand, eating too many processed foods can have the opposite effect, prematurely aging you. In particular, it’s important to avoid foods with trans fats, which can cause wrinkles and other signs of aging.

Trans Fats

You're better off avoiding trans fats for your overall health, particularly if you want to preserve a youthful appearance. Trans fats, which you can find in baked goods, fried foods, and even coffee creamers, can mean trouble for your skin.

In fact, trans-fatty acids can make you look older than your years if you aren't careful.

Trans fats can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage, and sun damage is one of the most prominent causes of unfortunate signs of aging, like sagging skin and wrinkles. According to Delish, "Trans-fatty acids leave your skin increasingly vulnerable to UV radiation, which causes damage to the elastin and collagen in your skin, and leads to wrinkles."

According to Eat This, Not That, that's not the only way trans fats can age you. Dr. Tasneem Bhatia, MD, explains,"Trans fat destroys hydration. The less your skin is hydrated, the faster the wrinkles appear."

Lisa Hayim, MS, RD, and founder of The WellNecessities, also explains to the outlet how trans fats can lead to an increase in inflammation, which can, in turn, lead to signs of aging.

"Consuming trans fatty acids stimulate interleukin 6 within the body," she explains. "Interleukin 6 is a marker of inflammation, which is associated with aging. In addition, fried and deep-fried oils, even those made with vegetable oils, can impair cell respiration and reduce immune functions within the body."

With that in mind, keeping trans fats in moderation is not only important for keeping your skin youthful, but can also help support your longterm health.
