The Dark Meaning Behind Katy Perry's 'Firework'

Katy Perry revealed in a 2010 interview with Billboard that while the song seems to be about perseverance and self-confidence, it's actually about her own personal final wish. "Basically, I have this very morbid idea," Katy explained. "When I pass, I want to be put into a firework and shot across the sky over the Santa Barbara Ocean as my last hurrah. I want to be a firework, both living and dead."

So when Katy belts out:

"'Cause baby, you're a firework / Come on, show 'em what you're worth /Make 'em go, 'Oh, oh, oh' / As you shoot across the sky / Baby, you're a firework / Come on, let your colors burst / Make 'em go, 'oh, oh, oh' / You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe!"

She's actually talking about herself, dead, being made into a firework and shot across the sky. Um, weird vibes, Katy.

She explained that she got the idea from a past boyfriend: "My boyfriend showed me a paragraph out of Jack Kerouac's book On the Road about people who are buzzing and fizzing and full of life and never say a common-place thing," she shared. "They shoot across the sky like a firework and make people go, 'Ahhh.' I guess that making people go 'ahhh' is kind of like my motto."
