Some of the settings on your iPhone are doing a serious number on your battery power — and are likely doing it without you knowing. You may be onto the fact that a too-bright phone can kill your battery and maybe you’ve even disabled Background App Refresh. But Wi-Fi Assist is yet another setting you need to know about because disabling could mean the difference between a phone battery that goes the distance and one that conks out long before it should. Here’s what you should know about dialing Wi-Fi Assist for better battery outcomes.

What Is Wi-Fi Assist?

Wi-Fi Assist can be an amazing tool. It boosts your Wi-Fi signal using data and does you the favor of automatically switching to cellular when you have a poor Wi-Fi connection. The feature debuted on iOS 9 and is incredibly convenient. If you’re in a public area and suddenly your Wi-Fi signal drops, Wi-Fi Assist works by getting your mobile data to take over so that you keep your connection.

Why Is Wi-Fi Assist So Draining?

The problem with Wi-Fi Assist is that it is working overtime, even when you don’t realize it is, and in the process is eating up your data. If you go into your Cellular settings, you’ll be able to track how much data you have used so far in your current billing cycle and turn off any apps that you don’t want to use your mobile data connection.

To access Wi-Fi Assist, go to Settings > Cellular. Scroll all the way to the bottom and you’ll see the Wi-FI Assist setting. Toggle it off to start saving data and money.
