John Legend recently attempted to cover Nate Dogg‘s famous part of “21 Questions” during his 45th birthday celebration in New York City with 50 Cent. Clips of his performance emerged on X (formerly Twitter) on December 30th, and they have led to him becoming a target of social media jokes.

Despite the fun moment that saw the Voice coach and rapper, 48, having fun on stage, many on social media felt that there was no need for Legend to join in and commented on the comedic outcome of his performance. “Why would John Legend get on stage and sing with 50 cent like that ???” one tweeted after hearing his dramatic vibrato as someone else replied: “I’m sorry, but all that yodeling John doing. Is not it!”

More X users shared their thoughts in threads with clips from the live cover. “That is horrendous. Should have just used Nate’s recorded voice, John Legend just sounds wrong on this!” one wrote. Someone else concurred: “This sounds so bad lmaoo.” Another joked: “John Legend said ‘It’s my birthday party and I’ll sing if I want to.'”

The hit “21 Questions” was featured on 50 Cent’s 2003 record, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, and also featured musical contributions from rappers J. Period and the late Nate Dogg.

Dogg (who passed in 2011 from a stroke) took on the simple and catchy chorus on the classic Y2K track, something that fans thought Legend "overdid" when covering it at his party.

"S/o to John but just hologram Nate and blast his mf vocals..this aint it," one wrote. Others stressed that Legend's voice is "obviously" great and acclaimed in its best-suited genre, R&B, rather than rap and hip-hop.

"John Legend is great singer can’t f—k wit Nate Dogg hook king," someone tweeted. Another agreed: "This ain’t it family lol love both these boys music but it wasn’t for his voice."

Before taking to the stage with 50 Cent, Legend was spotted having a birthday dinner with his wife, Chrissy Teigen, at The Polo Bar in New York City. The couple (who tied the knot in 2013 and share 4 children) donned matching all-black ensembles for the occasion.

On December 24th, the "All Of Me" hitmaker shared a photo collection post of shots of himself, Teigen, 38, and their kids celebrating the holidays.

This included wholesome photos of their daughter Luna, 7, son Miles, 5, daughter Esti, 1, and son Wren, 7 months. Fans couldn't get enough of the family photos and headed to his post comment section to share sweet messages.

"Thank you for sharing, John. And for allowing to have a glimpse of your beautiful family and life during this holiday season," one wrote. Another added: "I love your beautiful family. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas."
