John Legend recently attempted to cover Nate Dogg‘s famous part of “21 Questions” during his 45th birthday celebration in New York City with 50 Cent. Clips of his performance emerged on X (formerly Twitter) on December 30th, and they have led to him becoming a target of social media jokes.
Despite the fun moment that saw the Voice coach and rapper, 48, having fun on stage, many on social media felt that there was no need for Legend to join in and commented on the comedic outcome of his performance. “Why would John Legend get on stage and sing with 50 cent like that ???” one tweeted after hearing his dramatic vibrato as someone else replied: “I’m sorry, but all that yodeling John doing. Is not it!”
More X users shared their thoughts in threads with clips from the live cover. “That is horrendous. Should have just used Nate’s recorded voice, John Legend just sounds wrong on this!” one wrote. Someone else concurred: “This sounds so bad lmaoo.” Another joked: “John Legend said ‘It’s my birthday party and I’ll sing if I want to.'”
The hit “21 Questions” was featured on 50 Cent’s 2003 record, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, and also featured musical contributions from rappers J. Period and the late Nate Dogg.
