There are many beauty products out there that can help reduce signs of aging, from supplements that prevent thinning hair to skin-smoothing serums. One common beauty issue you may be searching for a solution to is sagging skin. Luckily, there are several serums that can tighten your face and eradicate this problem.

To learn more, we spoke to board certified plastic surgeon John Layke of Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery about the best serum combination to fight sagging skin. Layke said that in order to fix this issue, it’s vital to stimulate your body’s collagen production. Collagen plays a large role in skin health, helping to keep it strong, elastic, and hydrated. However, our body’s natural collagen production slows as we age.

“After the age of 18, we lose 1% of our skin’s collagen per year which means that in our 30s we can see up to a 20% loss,” he warns. So, how can we counteract this process? Layke says a combination of a Vitamin C serum and a nighttime retinol serum is a fantastic way to go.

Vitamin C

The first thing Layke recommends to fight sagging skin is to get your hands on a Vitamin C serum. Not only will this product help boost your collagen turnover and formation, but it will also keep your skin tight and bright—which means you can say goodbye to sagging for once and for all.

This product is also a great way to fight other signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. "It plumps and revitalizes the look of limp, sagging skin and can help fill out the appearance of wrinkles," Layke explains.

Dr. Robert Morrell, M.D., founder of Di Morelli Skin Care, also recommends Vitamin C for sagging skin. "Vitamin C is not only an antioxidant preventing accelerated aging, but also stimulates fibroblasts in the dermis to produce more collagen and elastin, resulting in healthier skin," he says.

Retinol

Next up on Layke's anti-sagging skincare suggestions is the almighty retinol serum, which will help brighten your skin. Layke notes that as we age, we accumulate layers of dead skin cells. This oftentimes leads to duller skin, but luckily, retinol offers a great solution, especially in combination with Vitamin C.

"A nighttime retinol serum helps promote younger-looking skin while you sleep as it penetrates deep down into the layers of your skin," Layke explains. "It supports natural cell turnover, circulation, and collagen processes to soften the look of lines, reduce the appearance of dark spots, and give loose skin a tighter, more sculpted look."

Dr. Morrell also sings the praises of retinol. "Retinoids in retinol serums stimulate collagen production and thicken the dermis," he says. That sounds extremely promising to us!

Of course, while serums like Vitamin C and retinol can be extremely helpful and reverse signs of aging, they're not the end-all-be-all of perfect skin health. Some lifestyle changes may also be in order. "To supplement these products, we also recommend that you do not smoke or sit in the sun," Layke says. He also stresses the importance of proper nutrition and hydration. "Drink lots of water to remain hydrated as this can give the skin a healthy glow," he says. Got it!

If you follow all of Layke's advice by properly caring for your skin and your body in addition to applying vitamin C and retinol every day, you'll be well on your way to tight, bright, youthful skin!
