It’s official–Uber could require that you submit a mask selfie before your next ride!
News that the company has pledged to a fully zero-emission fleet by 2040 this week may be outshined by this important update to their mask policy amid the novel coronavirus outbreak. Here’s everything we know:

While the company announced that it’s dedicating $800 million to electrifying its drivers, they also revealed that their new verification technology will require customers to snap a selfie and confirm that they’re wearing a mask before entering the vehicle. Wow!
The requirement is stealing headlines from their emission announcement. In a statement the global head of safety product Sachin Kansal told Thrillist, "We require all Uber users to wear a mask when driving, riding, or delivering. That's why we're introducing this new mask verification feature into the rider app this month." This is huge!

"We believe it will add another layer of safety and hope this new feature empowers drivers -- their feedback can help keep the platform safe for everyone," he continued.
So--what does this mean? Thrillist explains that you might not have to send a selfie unless your driver reports that you were mask-less on a trip. This flag will then prompt the app to require you use the verification tool for future rides.

The technology will launch in the US and Canada by the end of September. And this means any driver can turn you down, too. "As always, riders and drivers are free to cancel a trip, without penalty, if the other person isn’t wearing a mask," Uber said in a press release.
The company recently released a safety video aimed at underscoring the importance on both the driver and passenger side for wearing a mask.
