There are many bad habits that can make you look older – an improper beauty routine, a lack of sleep and even your diet can prematurely age your skin. It’s important to take a holistic, healthy approach to self-care in order to keep your skin looking fresh and young.

So it is extremely important to pay careful attention to the foods you eat.

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Marisa Garshick told SheFinds that fruits and vegetables can keep your skin looking young because, they “tend to offer antioxidant protection so help protect the skin against free radical damage.”

But at the same time, there are some foods you should never eat – and not just because they’re bad for your health. These foods can also make your skin age faster.

Here are the foods you should avoid:

1. Processed Foods

"Foods with a high glycemic index or processed foods can lead to worsening aging," Dr. Marisa Garshick told SheFinds. "This can result from free radical damage, increased sugar levels as well as increased exposure to advanced glycation end products which can contribute to skin aging as well as dullness and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles."

2. Baked Goods

Dr. Garshick added, "Trans fats, which can be found in baked goods, fried foods and fast foods, can increase inflammation and inflammation may contribute to signs of skin aging."

3. Alcohol

Dr. Garshick added, "Heavy alcohol intake can trigger oxidative damage and stress on the skin, contributing to the overall aging process and increasing signs and symptoms of aging. Additionally, it can be dehydrating for the skin which can contribute to dryness and worsening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles."

4. Sugar

"Foods that are high in sugar can impact elastin and collagen which can subsequently lead to wrinkles and sagging," Dr. Garshick said.
