We all know that the best way to ensure a healthy diet is to home cook as many meals as possible, because this way allows you to have full control over the ingredients used in your food. There are many healthy meals that can easily be made unhealthy simply by using the wrong ingredients so it is important to be fully aware of every impact associated with the ingredients you use.

And as it turns out, there is one cooking oil that many people use because it is believed to be a healthier alternative to butter, but in reality it can seriously harm your metabolism. We’re talking about canola oil.

Canola oil seems like it should be a healthy option because it has less saturated fats than its alternatives. However, this doesn’t mean it is good for you. The truth is that canola oil is one of the worst cooking fats you can use, because in the process of creating this oil, all of the nutrients are destroyed and trans fats are created.

This means that canola oil has basically no nutritional value, and instead can raise your intake of trans fats. Eating too many trans fats can cause you to gain weight and raise your levels of bad cholesterol. This may put you at risk of healthy problems including heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Cooking fats are necessary because they help flavor your food. So instead of skipping the oil completely, simply replace your canola oil with a better fat. Popular options that are surprisingly better for you than canola oil are coconut oil, sunflower oil, olive oil or butter.
