When you’re trying to maintain a healthy diet, the first steps that come to mind are usually not your coffee order. But for some of us, our coffee choices can be making a huge impact on our overall diet.

There is one hot drink that doctors actually say no one should eat because the ingredients in it can slow down your metabolism, making it harder to lose weight.

While coffee itself is actually a healthy drink that can boost your metabolism, adding too much milk and sugar to your drink can give you the opposite results. And that means that a flavored latte is the absolute worst drink you can have.

A latte is just espresso and steamed milk, which isn’t too bad on its own. But when you drink a large latte with a ton of milk, the amount of dairy you’re consuming can start to have an adverse affect on your metabolism.

Plus, ordering flavored lattes made with sugary syrups can start to really slow down your metabolism and start increasing your daily calorie intake.

“Persons who use liquids instead of food in a diet often think they are making healthy choices or lower-calorie choices. But that isn’t necessarily so,” Susan Besser, M.D. of Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland told NBC News.

This is because your body doesn’t detect liquid calories the same way it would detect solid food. So extra calories from a drink are actually worse for you than taking in extra calories from snacks.

Next time you’re craving a coffee drink, don’t opt for the latte. It isn’t worth the extra calories, especially when you can get the same amount of caffeine from a cup of coffee with just a splash of milk.

And if you’re really craving some extra flavoring, you can add a teaspoon of cinnamon to your drink. Not only does this add taste, but it can also help boost your metabolism.
