When you’re trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, home cooking plays an important role. For one thing, cooking your own food is the best way to control every ingredient that goes into your food and be sure that you’re eating the most healthy things. And for another thing, eating fresh produce, meat or fish ensure you get the most nutrients from your food.
However, cooking your own food doesn’t necessarily ensure that you are inherently eating well. While many people opt to cook with oil instead of butter since its fat content is lower, there are actually some cooking oils you should avoid because they are not as healthy as others.
Most people opt for canola oil when cooking because it contains lower amounts of saturated fats compared to other options. Plus, this oil seems like the healthy choice because it comes from natural ingredients, but in truth it is not the best oil you could be using.
Canola oil is very hard to find in an unprocessed state. The system of converting the rapeseeds it comes from into oil strips the natural ingredients of its nutrients, and therefore is not an excellent option. Plus, the processing also strips the oil of flavor, which is not something you want when trying to cook delicious food.
Instead of canola oil, next time you cook opt for a more flavorful and nutrient-dense oil such as olive oil, grapeseed oil or coconut oil. You’ll introduce more benefits into your meal, not to mention the rich flavoring you can add with these options.
