Adding White Toast

Toast is often considered a breakfast staple, but choosing white bread for toast could mean some serious health problems if you do not keep it in moderation.

That does not mean you have to skip bread altogether, but it does mean that you should limit the amount of refined grains you are eating. Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, author of Belly Fat Diet For Dummies, explains to Everyday Health, explains, "When a grain is refined, such as in the making of flour for white bread, the outermost and innermost layers of the grain are removed. This removes the fiber and some (25 percent) protein, leaving behind the starch."

She adds,"Since it's low in the fiber and protein that helps to slow digestion, white bread is digested and absorbed rapidly. This leads to blood sugar's rising quickly."

This can lead to mood swings as well as cravings.

Too much refined grains can also be a factor in weight gain.

Palinski-Wade explains, "Rapid digestion can increase hunger and cravings, leading to a lack of satiety after eating, which may result in increased caloric intake at the end of the day."

With that in mind, having white toast with your breakfast is probably not the best idea. And if you're having a healthy breakfast--like eggs or avocado toast--adding refined grains to your meal could detract from some of its health benefits.

Instead, try to opt for whole grain bread when possible.
