"We've identified many direct links between poor diet choices and digestive cancers," says nutrition epidemiologist Yohannes Melaku.
He further adds, "Unhealthy dietary patterns, marked by high consumption of red and processed meats, fast foods, refined grains, alcohol, and sugary beverages, present a worrying relationship with an increased risk of gastrointestinal cancers."
These cancers can range from throat, pancreas, rectum, and stomach, among many others.
"With the growing number of digestive cancers, such as bowel cancer, being diagnosed worldwide, and increasingly in people under 50 years old, it's time for action to protect people's digestive health," explains Melaku.
Melaku says that educating the public on the reality of eating these unhealthy foods could “be pivotal in reducing GI cancer risks and improving patient outcomes." He emphasizes the need to promote a healthy diet and lifestyle to combat these diseases.
Epidemiologist Zegeye Abebe and his team also noted how these foods can impact insulin sensitivity.
"Insulin resistance increases the risk of cancer through activation of insulin-like growth factor 1," he notes.
