A moto jacket has been on my shopping list for years–I know that I need one, but I’ve never been satisfied with the options. Either they’re too boxy and cropped in exactly the wrong place on my hip–OR they’re $1,000. Or, if they’re actually affordable, the leather and hardware look so cheap. It’s a real struggle, I tell ya.
So I was quite relieved when a pitch for Universal Standard’s new take on the classic landed in my inbox.
In case you’ve missed it, Universal Standard is a clothing company that’s revolutionized inclusive sizing for everything from jeans to dresses. They carry all styles and collections in sizes 00-40, including an impressive designer collab with Rodarte. They even recently launched a new shoe category featuring boots with stretchy shafts to fit all legs. I’m so glad we’re past the binary regular or wide shaft model!
Anyways, they’re really out here doing great things for the industry, and so when I saw a pitch from them concerning leather jackets–I was intrigued. Would they be able to improve on all the elements of the moto market I took issue with? What would the price be? I knew the size range would be good–but I had to try one for myself.
Quality
The jacket retails for $425 which is undoubtedly a splurge for most, but hear me out. The jacket is 100% genuine leather with topstitching details and metal hardware. I don’t know what deal they’ve made with devil, but the jacket is otherworldly soft (I’m stroking it now). And the weight of the jacket is absolutely perfection–it’s not too heavy, but not too light. It looks like it’s much more expensive than it is, and it feels like a quality piece you will wear forever.
Fit
Here’s where they really got me: the fit is what everyone wants these days, which is oversized, but I would never describe it as bulky or boxy. The holy grail that I’ve been searching for! It’s incredibly cool; you can easily wear it draped over your shoulder, belted or unbelted, zipped or unzipped. It kind of just *works*every way. Per usual for the company, it’s available in sizes 00 to 40. I’m a size 6 and the 3XS fits like a dream (don’t forget to check their unique size chart before ordering).
