There are a number of different apps that will contribute to a slower phone, and deciding which you can spare is a personal decision that won’t be the same for everyone. For one person, an app they consider “useless” could be a social media app that takes up too much of their time anyway and just so happens to be killing battery power, to boot. For someone else, the most useless app could be games or Podcasts, which can rapidly accumulate data and take up battery power.

One thing is certain. If you are struggling with a phone that isn’t efficient, takes forever to load pages or download apps, and is just plain annoying to use, it’s time to do something different. And that different move can be deleting some of the most resource-intensive apps out there that Apple experts say can slow your phone down.

1. Games

Gaming apps often feature intense graphics and that take a great deal out of your iPhone’s processor. The more of these apps that you have downloaded, the more taxing they are on your phone battery. As a result, they can force your phone to work slower than usual. You don’t have to delete all of your apps, but getting rid of a few of them and only keeping one or two you really like may help boost your phone’s speed.

2. Social Media Apps

Many people have not just one or two, but several social media apps downloaded to their phones. Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, and others collect a ton of cached data and store large files like photos, which consumes space and slows down your phone. They also tend to update in the background and will use up memory.

3. Streaming Apps

Streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime consume bandwidth and are especially taxing when you are watching high-definition programs. They can also take up a lot of storage space, which contributes to a slow down on your device. As with social media and games, if you can minimize the number of streaming apps you use, you can help speed up your phone and make it more efficient.
