Hudgens got candid about her five-year relationship with her High School Musical co-star during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter's Scott Feinberg for the Awards Center podcast last week. This was the first time that Hudgens had discussed Efron or their relationship since they split nearly 10 years ago in 2010.
“It started off really organically and I could not have been more grateful to have that relationship at that time,” she recalled, noting that the two had instant chemistry from the start. "I feel like we kind of created a bond right from the start. We were like…we’re doing this. It’s us or nothing.”
She shared that being with Efron helped her process the overnight fame that she had from the successful films, giving her an outlet to be herself and keep herself "grounded."
“We kind of blew up — it was this massive phenomenon and all eyes were on me and it’s just a really foreign, weird thing to go through — but by being in a relationship, I feel like it kind of kept me stabilized and grounded. I had someone to lean on who was going through it, as well," she explained.

Hudgens also revealed that it was hard to put their feelings on pause during filming, sharing that she and Efron would fight on set from time to time. She said that they tried their best to not let what was happening off-screen effect the cast, but there were moments that it would disrupt filming.
“I remember one time we did have a fight and it was while we were at rehearsals,” she said. “I remember [director] Kenny Ortega coming around the corner with the most concerned look on his face, like, 'Oh, no….is our movie going to fall apart now?!' I pride myself on being professional, so I was like, that aside…we’re just going to move forward and do what we need to do. And we sorted it all out. I was so young, having that relationship really stabilized me.”
