There are many imperfections that might plague your skin, yet one of the most annoying is rosacea. This common ailment results in a blushed or flushed appearance that tends to stick around for some time. Many people deal with rosacea or redness on a daily basis, as it can be caused by an array of factors ranging from diet to immune responses. Some people even experience rosacea as a result of emotional stressors or exercise.
“The redness of rosacea is often triggered by a combination of inflammation and is often associated with prominent blood vessels which can dilate and trigger flushing,” board-certified dermatologist Dr. Marisa Garshick tells SheFinds. “Some people find triggers to include hot or spicy foods, extreme temperatures, sun exposure, alcohol that contribute to rosacea and worsen redness.”
And while rosacea can often stick around for weeks at a time, the good news is we may have found a great way to prevent it from even starting. According to dermatologists, there is one vitamin you can take to help avoid unwanted redness.
Dr. Garshick advises us that taking vitamin B3 can help target rosacea at its cause, as it fights against the inflammation that can worsen the appearance of redness.
She says, "Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, may help improve the appearance of rosacea as it serves as an anti-inflammatory and is soothing on the skin. Niacinamide has been shown to reduce redness and also provides antioxidant and helps to support the skin barrier, which is also important for those dealing with rosacea as a way to reduce further sensitivity."
Dr. Garshick isn't alone in this recommendation, either. Fellow dermatologist Dr. Azadeh Shirazi agrees that rosacea is caused or worsened by inflammation, and can therefore be remedied with anti-inflammatory vitamins.
She explains, "Vitamin B3 reduces inflammation in Rosacea and improves the skin barrier. Vitamin C is also important mainly due to anti-inflammatory bioflavonoids. It also helps strengthen broken capillaries. Zinc helps reduce breakouts and redness seen in rosacea."
