You know those dark spots that seem to appear on your skin overnight? They have a more technical name — hyperpigmentation — and they’re notoriously stubborn to treat with creams and serums alone. But they’re not impossible to address. The right ingredients, both added to your diet and applied to your skin, can help (in-office treatments like lasers and peels are also a good solution and something to bring up with your dermatologist).
But, at the end of the day, healthy, clear skin starts from within. Some foods contain certain vitamins and minerals that can help brighten your skin and reduce the appearance of spots — and vitamin C-rich foods are at the top of that list. The next time you go to the grocery store, add these five vitamin C-rich foods to your cart that skin experts and nutritionists say you should eat every day to reverse hyperpigmentation.
LemonsLemons are rich in vitamin C, which encourages the production of collagen, according to Steve Theunissen, a registered dietitian nutritionist and ISSA /IFPA Certified Personal Trainer. “Your skin will seem clearer and brighter after drinking lemon water on a daily basis, and your liver will remain healthy as a result,” Theunissen says. “Our liver is also a vital organ for maintaining the health of our skin. Therefore, whenever feasible, add a lemon to your beverage.”
Ginger“Ginger is a potent digestive and anti-inflammatory agent,” Theunissen says, “Our face reveals when our digestive system is functioning appropriately. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory properties suggest that you’re less prone to develop wrinkles, acne, and all the other difficult to treat skin issues.”
StrawberriesThe vitamin C and antioxidants in strawberries are partially absorbed by the water when they are combined, giving your body all the nourishment it needs to glow, Theunissen explains. “Additionally, the salicylic acid in strawberries aids in lightening and fading skin discolorations and hyperpigmentation,” Theunissen says.
Red Bell PeppersRed bell peppers are packed with antioxidants, including vitamin C, which can help to fight free radicals and improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation, according to Dr. Firdous Ibrahim, a cosmetologist and aesthetic physician of Aesthetic Visions Clinic. “Red bell pepper provides about twice the amount of vitamin C as an orange,” Dr. Ibrahim says. “It also plays a role in immune function and collagen production.”
TomatoesLast but not least on the vitamin C-foods list, add fresh tomatoes to your salad or whip up a tomato sauce to increase your skin brightening potential.
“Tomatoes are another excellent source of vitamin C, as well as lycopene, an antioxidant that has been shown to be effective in treating hyperpigmentation,” Dr. Ibrahim says. “Tomatoes can help to lighten dark spots and improve overall skin complexion.”
