Wrinkles are an inevitable part of aging, and there’s nothing wrong with some wrinkles here and there!

Wrinkles are a natural part of the human experience, bringing personality to your face and signifying a life well lived. But in many cases, tiny wrinkles like crow’s feet can also be a source of insecurity, and it’s natural to wish for a smoother, wrinkle-free complexion.

These wrinkles form due to factors like age and sun exposure. As you get older, your skin loses elasticity and produces less natural oils, which dries it out and triggers wrinkles. You also lose fat in your face, causing lines and saggier skin. While you obviously can’t turn back the clock, adopting healthy lifestyle habits and applying sunscreen daily can go a long way, as can taking supplements. But which vitamin is the best for decreasing the look of fine lines and wrinkles? We consulted with the experts to find out.

Vitamin E

"Vitamin E is naturally produced by the sebum which is emitted through the pores on the skin," registerered dietician Trista Best explains. "This vitamin is oily and keeps the skin healthy, vibrant, and firm. Those with dry skin do not produce adequate amounts of vitamin E, leading to wrinkles, dark spots, and inflammation. Adding a vitamin E supplement to your morning regimen is an excellent way to help reduce and prevent wrinkles, including crow's feet."

Furthermore, because vitamin E is fat-soluble, it's more easily absorbed into the body when paired with food containing healthy fats. "For optimal absorption and extra vitamin E, you could add an avocado to your breakfast because it is packed full of healthy fats and vitamin E," Trista advises.

"Avocados (either fresh or frozen) can be added to a smoothie for a boost of vitamin E," she adds. "Their texture makes the smoothie creamy without overwhelming it in unnecessary flavor."

Beyond taking supplements, you can combat the look of wrinkles with retinoids. These skincare products are considered to be the gold standard for wrinkle reduction in the dermatology world, as they stimulate cell turnover and boost collagen production. You can find retinoids in over-the-counter creams, as well as prescription products.

However, retinoids are proven to make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so experts recommend being extra vigilant in your sunscreen application. Which, you should be doing anyway! While nothing can ever fully restore your skin, taking vitamin E regularly and being mindful with your sunscreen application can work wonders in taking years off your face.
