Walmart is launching a new service that would offer consumers an alternative to Amazon Prime. The subscription service, called Walmart+, is set to launch later this month, and its services will be similar to those offered by Amazon Prime.

According to Recode multiple sources have said, “It will include perks like same-day delivery of groceries and general merchandise, discounts on fuel at Walmart gas stations, and early access to product deals.”

The service will cost $98 a year (cheaper than Amazon Prime's annual membership fee), and it will include many features for customers, including unlimited same-day delivery of groceries and other goods and reserved delivery slots and open-slot notifications.

Considering how popular grocery delivery has become during Covid-19 and how difficult it can be to find open slots at other grocery stores (including Whole Foods), these features in particular might attract more customers as demand for grocery delivery increases.

That's not all.

According to Recode, "Walmart+ perks are also expected to include discounts on fuel at Walmart gas stations, early access to some product deals, and a Scan & Go service that would allow shoppers to check out in Walmart stores without waiting in line — a tool Walmart briefly tested but discontinued nearly two years ago. A Walmart+-branded credit card will also be introduced at some point after launch."

Plus, Walmart has plans to add video entertainment to the program (similar to Amazon Prime's Prime Video). This is not the first time Walmart has ventured into video entertainment.

According to the article, last week, the retailer launched CAMP, a free family entertainment program for Walmart App users this summer. Many notable celebrities are involved in the project, including Drew Barrymore, LeBron James, and Neil Patrick Harris.

Initially, Walmart+ was supposed to launch in late March or April, but it was delayed as a result of coronavirus.

Although the service is now set to launch this month, there is a possibility of it being delayed further. According to CBS News, "Walmart declined to provide details about the service or its expected launch date, but has confirmed that a subscription offering has been in the works."
