What Is An 'Italian Bob?' Stylists Tell Us Why This Chin-Skimming Blunt Bob Is So Flattering

When Aubrey Plaza made the rounds to promote The White Lotus Season 2, something just felt more Italian about her — and it had nothing at all to do with the fact that she had spent months in Sicily filming the popular series. Her hair, which has usually lingered past her shoulders, sometimes with bangs and sometimes without, was now chopped into the most elegant bob we’ve seen in some time. And remember: that’s saying a lot given how ubiquitous the bob has become.

This isn’t the bob’s first time at the rodeo. Over the years it has remained a constant on hair trend lists, though it tended to have more in common with a 1920s-style French bob — or a bob that is slightly messy and sexy with tons of layers and bangs. But the Italian bob is different. It’s got ‘60s retro appeal. You can picture yourself sporting it while flying down the Italian coast on a Vespa on your way to eat spaghetti al fresco.

And Aubrey isn’t the only one who made us start dreaming about Italian bobs. Zendaya looked stunning in hers. Kaia Gerber sported one. Elizabeth Olsen is chicness personified. And, speaking of White Lotus, let’s not forget Simona Tabasco, who played Lucia.

So, what exactly is the Italian bob and how does it different from other bobs? Professional Hairstylist Arrogant Smith, the Hair Consultant of keswigs.com, says the Italian Bob style is in trend now — here’s what you need to know about it.

What is the "Italian bob?"

The "Italian bob" is a chin-skimming hairstyle with blunt and curved edges for a modern look, Smith explains. “It's typically cut with the length hitting at or just below the chin, creating an elegant silhouette,” she says. “This style flatters all face shapes but especially looks great on round faces because of its edge-defining properties. The shape can be customized to individual preferences to create an ultra-flattering look for any occasion.”

How does it differ from other bob hair styles?

The Italian Bob is a classic style that has been updated for modern times and features a blunt cut with bangs swept to the side and chin-skimming length. “This style is suitable for all face shapes and provides volume at the crown, making it flattering no matter your hair type or texture,” Smith says. “It's a timeless look that can be dressed up or down, but it stands out compared to other bob styles due to its bold yet polished aesthetic. Compared to traditional bobs, an Italian Bob showcases a more angular line in front when worn sleek, framing the face nicely and creating an air of sophistication.”

Who does it most flatter?

The Italian Bob looks great on most face shapes, but it is flattering for those with oval, round or heart-shaped faces, according to Smith. “It's versatile and can be tailored to suit lifestyle, from the fashionable faux and tousled beach waves to sleek Hollywood glamour. This haircut will work well on various hair lengths and textures, allowing you to tailor the look to your unique individual needs. The Italian Bob offers endless possibilities whether you're looking for something edgy and modern or classic and timeless.”

What should you ask for when speaking with your stylist?

“When speaking with your stylist about getting an Italian Bob, be sure to ask them what length would work best for your face shape and hair type,” Smith says. Remember: bobs are customizable! “You should also ask them which products they recommend you use to style the cut and if they will use any techniques such as texturizing or razor-cutting to give it a more finished look. Be sure to let them know how often you plan to trim the style so they can determine how long it will last. Find out how much time is needed for blow drying and styling in order to keep this look looking its best day after day.”

What kind of maintenance should you expect after getting this cut?

When it comes to maintaining an Italian Bob, you should expect regular trims every 4-6 weeks. “To keep your hair looking its best between each trim, you should use the proper products, such as shampoo and conditioner formulated for your unique hair type, a heat-protecting spray when styling with hot tools like a blow dryer or flat iron, and light oils or serums to help keep split ends at bay,” Smith adds. “It's also important to ask your stylist what styling techniques they recommend for keeping the look fresh in-between visits. Be sure to ask about any maintenance needs specific to your hair texture since different types require slightly different care routines.”

What are your favorite styling tips to make this cut look great?

“My favorite tips for styling an Italian Bob are to ensure that the ends of your hair are blunt and crisp,” Smith recommends. “This can be done by using a flat iron or blow dryer with a concentrator nozzle, making sure to move the tool steadily in one direction until you have achieved your desired look. I also to add a bit of texture and body to the hair with light layers. This gives the cut an updated, modern feel while keeping it classic. After styling, a light-holding product be used to help keep the shape in. Working with a few strands a time, use your fingers or a tail comb to create subtle waves and movement throughout the cut. This will give it even more dimension and make it look effortless. Taking the time to tailor the cut to your unique texture and facial shape is important in ensuring the Italian Bob looks great on you.”

Don’t be surprised if your new Italian bob makes you look in the mirror and say, “Ciao, bella!”
