How To Change Your Passport
It's essential to change your name on your passport well before your honeymoon-- unless your passport name has to match the name you made your reservation under. According to the U.S. Department of State, the processing time for a name change can take 2-3 weeks for expedited processing and 4-6 weeks for routine processing. You'll also need to fill out different forms depending on when your passport was originally issued.
How To Update Your Bank Account and Credit Card
You'll also want to be sure to visit your local bank to find out exactly what you need to do with your account after a name change. According to TD Bank, you need to bring a copy of your marriage license and a valid photo ID to your bank to start the process.
How Your Name Change Affects Your Job
Brides may have the decision to keep their maiden names at their jobs if they want to secure the name they've built their careers on. However, there are important things you should check in with at your job to assure everything continues to flow smoothly. According to The Muse, you should talk with HR regarding your name and your insurance or 401k.
Not To Forget A Visit To The DMV
While the DMV may be the last place you want to visit, you must do so after a legal name change if you have a driver's license. According to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles, you'll need to bring your completed application for a driver's license, your current license, and your marriage certificate to get a new license after your name change.
How To Change Your Social Security Card
You always want to stay up to date with your social security information, and to make sure you keep that information safe and secure. According to Social Security, there is no charge for your new social security card, but you must notify them after you get married. You'll need to have your required documents, proof of your identity, and a completed application for a new card. You can then mail these documents in or visit your local Social Security office.
