Whoopi Goldberg has faced criticism for her controversial opinions quite a few times over the years; and she has come under fire yet again, this time for something she said about needing to work on a recent episode of The View.
On the Tuesday, November 12th episode of the talk show, the 69-year-old EGOT winner was talking with her co-hosts about what Donald Trump winning the presidential election would mean for the country, in reference to the current economic climate.
What Did Whoopi Goldberg Say On 'The View'?
The Sister Act star, who reportedly has a net worth of $45M, started comparing herself to working-class and middle-class Americans who are having a "hard time" in the current economic climate, claiming that she wouldn't be working if she didn't have to.
"I appreciate that people are having a hard time," the Long Walk Home actress began. "Me too. I work for a living," she continued, adding: "If I had all the money in the world, I would not be here, Ok? So, I'm a working person."
Goldberg then went on to say that she isn't the only one feeling the pinch, as her daughter and other members of her family are seemingly struggling too. She said: "My kid has to feed her family. My great-granddaughter has to be fed by her family. I know it's hard out there."
Internet Reactions
As expected, the Color Purple alum's comments were met with criticism online. One person wrote on X: "Whoopi Goldberg claims she's a 'working class American' and that her family currently knows the struggles of affording groceries. She has a net worth of $45 MILLION."
"She's got to be one of the most tone-deaf celebrities I've ever seen," replied one X user, adding: "I truly don't know how anyone genuinely watches this lady except to mock her." A second concurred: "All these overpaid actors are completely out of touch with reality." "She's so out of touch with regular people it's ridiculous," echoed a third.
A fourth X user replied: "She's lost all credibility if she ever had any. Just go back to being a comedian and an actor and quit trying to tell people about things you don't even know about." "This is the whole problem with the Democrat elitist party. They think they are down with the struggle while being worth millions of dollars," another chimed in.
"If she's working class, I'm starving class," quipped another X user, as someone else said: "Rich Democrats are so out of touch with normal people that their attempts to be relatable just make them look absurd." "She's either a flat-out liar and pretender or just completely out of touch with reality," added another.
