If you’ve wondered if your greasy egg order at your local diner is better or worse than other items on the menu (like bacon, hash browns or pancakes–mmm), we have the answer.
In pursuit of the perfect breakfast, we spoke to Washington DC-based chef Dadisi Olutosin to get the low down on ordering eggs. Here’s what he had to say:
Health Benefits Of Eggs
"Eggs, regardless of what type of restaurant you eat them in are extremely high in nutritional value, roughly 7 grams of protein," Dadisi tells us. "Especially when you consider the amount of natural protein you get from an egg, only second to cow milk. The health benefits are enormous!" So true. Eggs and egg whites are approved for most diets, from Atkins to Keto, Whole 30, Paleo and more.
Warnings About Diner Preparation
"Like any cooked items, it’s all in the preparation," Dadisi warns. "If the eggs are deep fried or scrambled in a large amount of fatty oils then you’ve taken a very healthy thing and made it extremely unhealthy. I think this is how most people associate eggs being prepared in a diner environment." Well, that certainly makes sense.
How To Order Them Instead
"My suggestion as a chef is that you simply get the eggs poached or soft or hard boiled for the maximum health benefit," he advises. "If you’re going to get them fried, scrambled or as an omelette ask that they’re cooked without additional oil or butter."
