Will Smith, 55, had many kind words for estranged wife Jada Pinkett Smith, 52, following the release of her memoir Worthy on October 17th – even despite her dropping some bombshells about their relationship in it!
If you’ll recall, Pinkett Smith wrote how she and the King Richard actor, who tied the knot in 1997, have actually been separated since 2016, and confirmed they were at the 2022 Oscars, where the infamous Chris Rock slap happened, “as family, not as husband and wife.” She also touched on it in a recent interview with People, telling the pub: “We’re still figuring it out. We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other, and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.”
Additionally, Jada spoke about the dynamic of their relationship in an interview with Hoda Kotb which aired on October 13th. “I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce,” she told Kotb on Jada’s Story—An NBC News Special. “We will work through whatever. And I just haven’t been able to break that promise,” she continued, before confirming: “We live separately.”
Will Smith 'Applauds' Jada Pinkett Smith's Memoir
The I Am Legend actor wrote a letter about his thoughts on his estranged wife's memoir, which was read out on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast. He wrote: "I just turned the final page of Worthy. It is amazing to realize that despite having lived most of my life by your side, I still found myself shocked and stunned and caught off guard, laughing, then inspired, then heartbroken. I was all over the place. It's one thing to hear anecdotes at a family barbecue, but it was truly overwhelming to take in your story, potently condensed in this way."
"I know it wasn't easy to excavate the depths in that way. I applaud and honor you," his letter continued. "If I had read this book 30 years ago, I definitely would have hugged you more. I'll start now. Welcome to the Authors Club. I love you endlessly. Now go get some Merlot and take a rest."
The Red Table Talk host responded: "He knows I can't have no Merlot! That's beautiful. That's why I can't divorce that joker." She added: "To hear him say that he would have hugged me more is me hearing him say he would have taken a bit more time to listen and understand."
Fan Reactions To Will Smith's Comments
While Jada may have found Will's response "beautiful," not all of the internet agreed. "What is wrong with this guy?" asked one fan in the comments section to an Ok! magazine Instagram post about Will's reaction to Jada's memoir, followed by a shocked emoji. "She’s definitely got something on him. It must be real good," thought another fan.
"He needs a personality transplant. Sir, she has dogged you at every turn," commented another Instagram user, while someone else said: "He’s just as messed up as her… there is no freeing WILL. He needs to free himself 1st.""He’s in a cult," someone else claimed, as another asked: "Midlife crisis Will?" Others were a little more compassionate, with one person writing, "Poor man, I feel sorry for you," and another adding, "Poor Will."
