The ‘Wispy Bangs’ Hairstyle You Should Ask For This Fall Because It’s So Flattering
November 17, 2022 by Marissa Matozzo
If you’re looking for a fresh, easy to style and timelessly flattering new cut to celebrate the changing of the seasons, look no further! When it comes to the biggest hair trends of 2022, and one that dominated BeautyTok this fall especially, wispy curtain bangs come to mind. Adding a bouncy, eyebrow-grazing fringe to long layers, professional hair stylists tell us, is a tried-and-true way to add volume, movement and fullness to fine, thin, thick or curly hair.
With that said, we rounded up tips from hair experts regarding wispy curtain bangs, and how to rock the look for each hair type. Read on for tips, suggestions and insight from Gina Rivera, celebrity hairstylist and Founder of Phenix Salon Suites, Ghanima Abdullah, hair expert and cosmetologist at The Right Hairstyles and Lauren Udoh, professional hair stylist and Hair Creative Director of WigReports.
The key to adding instant volume and movement to your hair with a fringe this fall, Abdullah says, is to have the hair at your crown cut in a wispy, delicate way (as opposed to blunt and thick bangs that can overpower your look). The beauty of trendy curtain bangs, she notes, is that they can be parted in the middle (or worn down) and are easy to style, meaning that while they can provide a fresh change to your look, they aren’t too drastic.
“Curtain bangs make your hair appear thicker and are a great way to add volume to thinning hair,” she explains, adding, “the style works well for women who want to hide thinning hair in the front.” A lot of people love curtain bangs, she points out, because they “add length and volume so you don’t have to spend hours styling.” They can also be worn “short or long, curled or straight,” and ultimately, “can add volume and texture to any style.” The key, she stresses, is to “keep the bangs long enough to cover the eyebrows and frame the face and eyes.”
If you wish to keep your hair long when adding wispy curtain bangs, Abdullah suggests getting shorter layers for more volume if you have finer hair, and longer ones to balance it all out if your locks are thicker. “Short layers are cut on a slight angle for long, fine hair and are meant to help create volume,” she says. “Long layers, on the other hand, are for those who have really thick hair and are trying to thin it out,” she notes. Wispy, curtain bangs, she adds, “flatter just about any face at any age,” when cut to promote symmetry and highlight your facial features (your stylist can help with this!) They “neatly frame the face while drawing attention away from serious aging signs,” she points out. Udoh concurs, adding, “a layered cut can help to add dimension and movement, which can help to disguise any unevenness in the face.”
Abdullah stresses that getting wispy curtain bangs cut to match your face shape is a great way to rock a more symmetrical look. “Curtain bangs make your face appear smaller and slimmer when they come down to cheek level,” she says. If you have a tall forehead, they “effortlessly minimize it,” she continues, and “this is different from the obvious effect of bangs that are cut straight across and frequently used to shorten a forehead.” If you wear these bangs at eye level, they “bring more emphasis to your smile and can fill in your cheeks as well,” she says.
Rivera agrees and says that these wispy bangs are “huge right now and a great way to add to a style.” She advises to “always visit a professional who can provide a consultation regarding the appropriate length for your facial features.” When cut to match your face shape, Rivera also says that these bangs “offer a lot of movement, which always creates the illusion of fullness, and they can easily be styled to create a fuller appearance.”
Overall, Udoh concludes that curtain bangs can be “flattering for women of any age because they create a sense of volume and fullness around the face.” They also work well with “many different hairstyles,” making them a “versatile choice for any woman.” This, she says, makes them an “excellent option” for women who want to change their look regularly.
