Starting your day with the right beverages can set the tone for your energy levels and overall health. However, some popular morning drinks can contribute to inflammation and cause blood sugar spikes, leading to fatigue, cravings, and even long-term issues. Choosing drinks wisely is essential for maintaining stable energy, supporting metabolic health, and reducing inflammation throughout the day.

We checked in with Dr. Krutika Nanavati, registered nutritionist and dietitian, to learn about two popular morning drinks you should minimize because they can worsen inflammation and cause blood sugar spikes. According to her, fruit juice and sugary coffee drinks are the ones to avoid. Read on to learn more.

1. Fruit Juices

While fruit juice may sound healthy, store-bought ones come with many downsides. It often hides concentrated sugars and lacks fiber. Dr. Nanavati explains, "These juices lead to blood sugar spikes and miss out on the satiating benefits of whole fruit."

Many commercial juices also include added sugars and preservatives, which can make inflammation worse. Without fiber, the sugars in juice are absorbed quickly into the bloodstream, causing rapid blood sugar spikes.

For a healthier alternative, try to create your own juice at home using whole fruits and vegetables; this will ensure you consume all of the nutrients, including fiber, without all the excess sugar and calories.

2. Sugary Coffee Drinks

Let's be honest: we all look forward to our morning cup of coffee, but sugary ones such as lattes and cappuccinos are packed with syrups, whipped cream, and artificial additives, which can be harmful. "These drinks can pack a sugary punch, spiking blood sugar and promoting inflammation," says Dr. Nanavati.

High sugar intake is linked to increased inflammatory markers. Additionally, these drinks often contain a lot of empty calories, leading to weight gain and further inflammation.

Opting for black coffee or a simple espresso can be a much healthier way to enjoy your morning caffeine fix (and may even help you lose weight).
