The One Ingredient You Should Avoid At All Costs When Cooking Breakfast, According To Nutritionists

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but you could be starting your daily diet off on the wrong foot if you are not careful about what you’re eating. Specifically, certain ingredients that are common in breakfast foods could lead to serious trouble for your diet.

According to Joanna Foley, RD and CLT, the one breakfast ingredient you should always avoid is refined flour.

Refined Flour

Refined flour tops Foley's list of breakfast ingredients to avoid for many reasons. She explains, "It provides almost entirely "simple" carbohydrates with minimal fiber, protein, or fat."

With that in mind, avoiding this ingredient could be crucial to maintaining a healthy diet.

Simple Carbs

Foley explains how simple carbs devoid of nutrients can negatively impact your health: "This causes the blood sugar to rise very drastically and then crash, which is bad for metabolism and hormone balance (and of course not ideal if someone has Diabetes or blood sugar imbalances)."

Unfortunately, this ingredient is present in many popular breakfast items.

Foley continues, "Refined flour can be found in breakfast cereals, bagels, donuts, english muffins, pastries, pancakes, waffles, and pre-packaged breakfast bars."

Staying away from these items could keep your metabolism running properly and help you achieve your weight loss goals more quickly.

Instead of opting for a breakfast full of simple carbs, try making a metabolism-boosting smoothie instead. This way, you'll feel better throughout the day and lose weight sooner.
