Desserts are always a major obstacle for dieting. They’re probably the most difficult thing to give up, especially for those people who have major sweet tooths. But moderating your intake of sugar is crucial for weight loss.

Sometimes your sweet tooth can get the best of you, and it’s okay to have some desserts in moderation. But eating too many sweets will not only lead to weight gain, but also health complications like diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease.

Although many desserts are bad for you in excess, there's one that takes the cake (sorry, had to) with slowing weight loss. This sweet treat will ruin your daily diet in an instant. Can you guess which one it is? The answer might shock you!

banana split

Banana splits are definitely the worst dessert that's ruining your diet! Food expert and Livestrong writer Melissa Adele Haskin stated that this dessert can really pack on the calories. "A single banana split can be upwards of 1,000 calories and pack more than 30 grams of fat," she said. Yikes!

If you're really craving a banana split, try making some healthier adjustments. Haskin recommends using only one scoop of ice cream (or frozen yogurt if you're really watching calories) instead of three. Also, try to cut down on the amount of toppings you put on it. Each topping is more added empty calories, so the simpler the better. Use topping like fresh fruit or granola instead of sprinkles and chocolate syrup for a nutritious, low-cal banana split!
