Dunkin’ may be your go-to spot for cold brew or munchkins in the morning, but experts warn that you should absolutely avoid their breakfast sandwiches when dining at the Massachusetts-based chain.
“Dunkin Donuts has a breakfast menu that includes breakfast sandwiches, not just donuts,” Lisa Richards, CNC, founder of The Candida Diet tells us. “This menu is diverse in what it offers and has a few items that could even be considered low calorie. However, this isn’t the case for most of these breakfast sandwiches,” she warns.
One sandwich in particular, the sausage egg and cheese sandwich on a croissant roll, should is the worst. Why? Because it’s packed with more than half of the daily calories recommended for most women. Here’s the skinny on this very fattening breakfast option:
Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Croissant
To start, this greasy morning meal contains 720 calories alone.
“For anyone eating between 1500 and 2000 calories this could be nearly half your daily calories for just one breakfast item,” Lisa explains. Yikes!
And unless you’re trying to blow most of your calories before 9am, nutritionists recommend that you opt for something with fewer calories instead.
And the nutritional information doesn’t get much better from there.
“Moving down the nutrition label doesn’t make this sandwich any more healthier with 52 grams of fat, 20 grams of saturated fat, 42 grams of carbs, and 1120 mg of sodium,” she warns. “Each of these numbers represent a high amount of a potentially dangerous nutrient.”
Holly Klamer, MS, RDN, agrees. “The 1,120 mg of sodium is considered 49% DV for sodium!”
