Cancer is a complex disease influenced by various factors, including genetics, lifestyle, and diet. While no single food causes or prevents cancer, certain foods are known to increase cancer risk due to their impact on the body. For women over 40, it’s especially important to be mindful of dietary choices, as hormonal changes and aging can heighten susceptibility to certain cancers.

1. Processed/Salted Meats

Mandell says foods such as sausages, hot dogs, and bacon are particularly “harmful as they contain nitrates and nitrites, which can form carcinogens.”

These foods also contain an alarming amount of salt and certain preservatives that promote inflammation and damage the lining of the stomach.

sugary drinks

2. Sugary Drinks/Refined Carbs

He adds that foods such as sodas, pastries, and white bread “are dangerous because they spike insulin levels.” These can lead to obesity and inflammation, and Mandell notes that both of these “are significant risk factors for cancer.”

These foods are also high in calories but low in nutritional value. Obesity is a huge risk factor for several types of cancer and inflammatory markers that promote cancer growth.

trans fat

3. Trans fats

Trans fats are found in many items, such as fried foods and packaged baked goods.

“They need to be avoided as they increase inflammation and oxidative stress, potentially causing cell damage that could lead to cancer," he warns.

Mandell concludes by adding that “in order for your body to stay healthy, you need to eat well.”

The bottom line

Adding nutrient-dense foods with high antioxidant content and anti-inflammatory properties can reduce your risk of cancer, especially as you age. Foods such as cruciferous veggies, berries, citrus fruits, whole grains, healthy fats, legumes, and drinks such as green tea are some of the best choices!
