Fruits are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making them a staple in a healthy diet. However, not all fruits are ideal for weight loss. While they offer natural sweetness and fiber, some fruits are higher in sugar and calories, which can slow down your progress if you’re trying to cut back on weight. Choosing the right fruits in moderation can help support your goals, while others may lead to unwanted sugar spikes and cravings.

Health experts at OG Fitness shared the fruits you might want to limit if you’re trying to “cut down on weight” this season. Read on to learn more.

Avoid: Watermelon, grapes, mangos

While fruits are generally considered healthy, some can be less ideal for weight loss due to their high sugar content and glycemic index, which can cause blood sugar spikes and increased cravings.

Though hydrating and low in calories, watermelon has a high glycemic index, meaning it can cause rapid blood sugar spikes. This can lead to increased hunger and cravings, making it harder to maintain a calorie deficit.

Grapes are naturally high in fructose, a type of sugar that can be easily overconsumed since they are small and easy to snack on. Eating too many can add up in calories quickly, potentially hindering weight loss efforts.

While rich in vitamins and fiber, mangos are one of the highest-sugar fruits, containing around 45 grams of sugar per fruit. This can contribute to insulin spikes and excess calorie intake, making it more difficult to burn fat efficiently.

Experts say they see “far too many people make this mistake. These three fruits that they eat may seem healthy but it’s really not going to help them with losing weight. These fruits contain high amounts of sugar and carbohydrates. You want to avoid these.”

The bottom line

If you're aiming to lose weight, it's best to enjoy these fruits in moderation and opt for low-sugar, high-fiber options like berries, apples, or pears to keep you full longer and stabilize blood sugar levels.

Experts highly recommend choosing ones that are healthier or are in the berries department. “Anything that has berries attached to its name is healthy, like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries.”
