1. Alfredo Sauce

Alfredo sauce has a combination of butter, heavy cream, and cheese. It’s also loaded with saturated fat and contains a high calorie content.

Michael O. McKinney, MD, physician and nutrition expert from Healthy Outlook, says, "The Alfredo sauce has always been thick and calorie-dense as one of its bases is made of heavy cream, butter, and cheese. Most of the calories and saturated fat added to this sauce result in weight over time, which poses a concern since it increases the risk of metabolic diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes. Further, consuming a lot of sodium in the alfredo sauce has been associated with reduced metabolic rate due to the deposition of high levels of cholesterol."

2. Ranch Dressing

Ranch dressing may seem innocent as they are often associated with vegetable sticks, but it’s full of unhealthy fats, sodium, and even added sugars. It primarily contains unhealthy fats which can slow down metabolism if consumed in excess.

"Ranch on the other hand is considered a dressing that can boost any meal, though it does not come scot-free of calories, sodium and bad fats," McKinney notes. "Practice and convenience of using ranch dressing regularly would bring about added weight and metabolic slowdown resulting from what one can't control in terms of caloric intake and qualitative intake of processed oils and fats. There is also sodium, which causes water retention and bloating, making matters worse for metabolism," he adds.

3. Hollandaise Sauce

Hollandaise is a delicious and rich condiment that is made from butter, egg yolks, and lemon juice. McKinney says this sauce can “take a toll” on your metabolism due to its heavy calorie content.

"It is a nutritional deficiency as it is loaded with fats and calories, and this encourages obesity and insulin resistance. Hollandaise consumption will make it easy to gain weight as more fat will be stored in the body, increasing metabolic disorders like obesity as the metabolic rate is not effective in dealing with the excess calories and fats ingested by the body," he reveals. Remember, practice moderation with these high-calorie sauces!

tartar sauce

4. Tartar Sauce

Tartar sauce is usually made from mayo, pickles, and other different flavorings. Because the base ingredient is mayo, it can contain a significant amount of fat, mostly unhealthy fat from vegetable oils and saturated fat.

"This classic condiment for fried seafood can have around 150 calories per two tablespoon serving. Loaded with mayonnaise and sugar, tartar sauce can elevate your daily calorie intake without providing essential nutrients, ultimately slowing down your metabolism," Johanna Angman, registered dietitian nutritionist, says.

5. Cheese Sauce

Although a gooey cheese sauce can be one of the most comforting additions to snacks and other foods, it is an unhealthy sauce for your metabolism due to its saturated fat content.

"Often found drizzled over nachos, pasta, or vegetables, cheese sauce can pack an astounding 300 calories or more per serving. Made with cheese, butter, and cream, this sauce is high in saturated fats, which can lead to weight gain and hinder your metabolic rate," Angman explains.

6. Caesar Dressing

Just like ranch, Caesar dressing is often marketed as a healthier option because of its link to salads. But in reality, it’s mostly made with ingredients like mayo, cheese, egg yolks, and oils.

"This creamy dressing, commonly used on salads, can range from 150 to 200 calories per two tablespoon serving. With its rich blend of mayonnaise, cheese, and oils, Caesar dressing can lead to increased fat intake, which is known to disrupt metabolic function and promote weight gain," Angman states.
