High-glycemic foods, which cause rapid spikes in blood sugar, can negatively impact both memory and overall brain health. These foods, such as refined carbs and sugary snacks, lead to sudden energy highs and crashes, which can impair cognitive function and focus. Over time, regular consumption of high-glycemic foods can contribute to inflammation and insulin resistance, both of which are linked to declining brain health and increased memory-related issues.
We checked in with health experts who shared three of the worst high-glycemic foods to avoid because they’re “impairing” your memory. They revealed that sugary breakfast cereals, pastries, and processed breads are the ones to avoid.
1. Breakfast Cereals
Breakfast cereals, often marketed as healthy choices, are a popular morning food to be wary of. Neuroscientist Robert Love points out that "most of them are high in sugar, so that will spike your insulin and increase the risk of type two diabetes." Additionally, many cereals also contain wheat, which includes gluten. Gluten increases inflammation, further contributing to the risk of Alzheimer's disease and other inflammatory conditions. The combination of high sugar and gluten content makes breakfast cereals a poor choice for maintaining brain health.
All that sugar can aso take a toll on your health. Dietitian Krutika Nanavati explains, "This can cause blood sugar spikes and crashes, leading to brain fog and difficulty concentrating."
2. Pastries and Donuts
Pastries and donuts are breakfast staples that are high in sugar and unhealthy fats. According to Nanavati, "This can impair cognitive function and contribute to memory problems."
The combination of sugar and trans fats in these foods can cause inflammation and oxidative stress, which can negatively impact brain health and lead to issues with memory and focus.
Additionally, the high-calorie content with little nutritional value means these foods can contribute to weight gain and associated metabolic disorders, further affecting brain function.
3. Processed Bread
Although carbs like bread are linked to weight gain, they can actually impact the brain too.
"These are highly processed and have tons of gluten in them, which can be highly genetically modified and often are sprayed excessively with glyphosate," says Dr. Sandison. Glyphosate, a common herbicide, is "directly toxic to the neurological system," making it a significant concern for brain health. Dr. Sandison advises avoiding conventional breads or pastas that contain wheat to minimize exposure to these harmful substances.
