Bloating, that uncomfortable sensation of fullness and abdominal distension, is a common experience for many. However, for some individuals, this discomfort becomes chronic, persisting day in and day out. Chronic bloating can not only be physically uncomfortable but also emotionally taxing. What you might not realize is that some of the ingredients we regularly cook with can play a significant role in exacerbating chronic bloating.

We spoke with registered dietitian and nutritionist Krutika Nanavati to learn about the worst ingredient you can cook with because it worsens bloating. Nanavati revealed that adding onions in your cooking is among the factors contributing to heightened chronic bloating.

Onions

Cooking with onions, while adding flavor and depth to dishes, can be a potential trigger for chronic bloating in some individuals. Onions contain compounds called fructans, and for those who are sensitive to fructans or have conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), consuming onions, especially in large quantities, can contribute to chronic bloating and digestive discomfort.

"Onions contain compounds called fructans. Fructans are a type of carbohydrate that is not easily broken down in the small intestine." She states that "eating too much of onions can lead to an increase in the amount of gas produced."

When these fructans reach the colon undigested, they become a feast for gut bacteria, leading to gas production and bloating.
