3 Types Of Meat To Stop Eating Because They Could Be Bad For Your Brain, Experts Warn: Red Meat, More

Maintaining a healthy diet is important for more than just weight loss; the foods you eat play a crucial role in every area of your wellbeing, including your brain health. And while there are so many fantastic, brain-friendly foods you can add to your plate on a daily basis, it’s also important to remember that many options can have a negative effect on your noggin—including a few types of meat.

To highlight a few of the worst meats for your brain, we spoke to nutritionist Trista Best. She told us that certain types of meat can have a negative impact on cognitive function due to their high levels of saturated fats, sodium, and harmful cooking methods. According to her, processed meats, red meats, and charred meats should all be avoided (or at least consumed in moderation). Learn more about the risks of each below.

1. Processed Meats 

We loved a hot dog that's been loaded up with all of our favorite toppings—but our brain may feel differently about this processed meat. "Processed meats are particularly concerning due to their high levels of sodium, saturated fat, and nitrates/nitrites," Best warns. "These components can lead to inflammation and oxidative stress, which are linked to cognitive decline." In addition to hot dogs, other common processed meats include bacon, sausage, deli meats, salami, and pepperoni. Best notes that studies suggest a connection between processed meat consumption and an increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases like dementia. Yikes! Opting for whole, unprocessed meats can help reduce these risks.

2. Red Meats like Beef, Lamb, and Pork

Craving a burger? We're right there with you. But if you're concerned about your brain health, you may want to think twice about eating red meat on a regular basis. "Red meat is known for being high in saturated fats, which can elevate the risk of conditions like heart disease," Best says. "Indirectly, this can affect blood flow to the brain, potentially reducing cognitive function over time." Overconsumption of red meats has been associated with increased brain inflammation and poor brain health. Limiting red meat intake and balancing it with lean protein options can support better cognitive function.

3. Charred Meats 

Reconsider firing up that grill! Meats cooked at high temperatures can be a no-go for your brain. "Cooking meats at high temperatures, such as grilling or pan-frying, can produce advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and heterocyclic amines (HCAs)," Best tells us. "These compounds may damage brain cells and contribute to inflammation." We had no idea! These cooking methods can harm cognitive function over the long term. You may be better off considering alternative methods.
