Ordering a salad at a restaurant isn’t always a safe bet, experts warn.
If you’re taking a trip to food chains like Chipotle or McDonald’s this week, you’d be surprised to learn where on the menu the calories bombs lie. And yes, in some cases, they are the ones sitting on a bed of lettuce!
We spoke to registered nutritionist and nurse Jay Cowin, about the least healthy menu option available at Chipotle–and shockingly, the salads are worse than the Mexican grill’s infamous loaded burritos!
Steak Salad
“At 1,305 calories, and a whopping 76.5 grams of fat, the steak salad at Chipotle is probably the least healthy thing you could eat,” Cowin, who is the Director of Formulations at ASYSTEM, tells us. Say it ain’t so!
But that’s not all–there’s a way to make *any* order healthy, Cowin advises, and that involves not eating their (delicious) but high-calorie chips on the side.
“If you’re trying to eat healthier and count calories, steer clear of the chips,” he advises.
The salty chips from the food chain clock in at 570 calories and 27 grams of fat per serving–which Cowin notes rivals the fat and calorie content of a McDonald’s Big Mac–but without the protein content! Yikes, so they’re actually worse than a Big Mac.
