Nutella
Nutella is a popular spread, but that does not mean you should be using it on a regular basis.
Leah Kaufman, MS, RD, CDN a New York City-based Registered Dietitian, explains to Eat This, Not That!, "Spreads like Nutella are primarily sugar and palm oil, with almost no actual nuts involved. With over 20 grams of added sugar and only two grams of protein, the spread just winds up at your waist."
Rice Cakes
Rice cakes are high on the glycemic index, which can be a problem if you want to lose weight.
Eat This explains, "Researchers at the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center found high-GI snacks caused excessive hunger and increased activity in craving and reward area of the brain—the perfect storm for overeating and weight gain."
Canned Fruit
Canned fruit that is packaged in heavy syrup can be a roadblock to weight loss--adding sugar to an otherwise healthy snack. For example, according to the Food Network, "One-half cup of pears canned in their own juice provides 60 calories and 12 grams of sugar. However, when packed in heavy syrup, the same amount contains 100 calories and 19 grams of sugar. Those extra 40 calories and 7 grams of sugar are all from added sugars."
Granola
Granola is often considered a healthy snack or breakfast option, but most store bought brands can really be the opposite. In fact, many of them are so high in sugar, calories, and fat that they really should be considered a dessert or an occasional treat.
With that in mind, cutting this pantry food out of your diet is a good way to make sure when you're trying to eat healthy, you actually are.
