Processed foods may be convenient and tasty, but they can come with serious downsides—especially when it comes to aging and longevity. Many ultra-processed items are loaded with added sugars, unhealthy fats, refined carbs, and artificial ingredients that can wreak havoc on your skin, your cells, and your overall health. Over time, regularly consuming these foods can lead to inflammation, glycation (which breaks down collagen), and oxidative stress—all of which contribute to premature aging and even a shorter lifespan.

Dr. Robert Love and Dr. Josh Helman recently uncovered three foods you should avoid at all costs because they can “make you look older” and even shorten your lifespan. According to them, salad dressings, fried foods, and hot dogs/processed meats are the ones to avoid. Read on to learn more.

1. Salad dressing

Store-bought salad dressings—especially the creamy or fat-free varieties—can be sneaky culprits when it comes to accelerating aging.

Many commercial dressings contain high amounts of added sugar, which can lead to glycation—a process where sugar molecules attach to collagen and elastin proteins in your skin, breaking them down and causing wrinkles and sagging over time. While salads are typically nutrient-rich, low-quality dressings can offset those benefits by flooding your body with ingredients that offer little to no nutritional value—doing your skin and longevity zero favors.

Dr. Helman says that salad dressings with high levels of omega-6s, gluten, and heavy processing are options you should avoid.

2. Fried foods

Fried foods are typically cooked in refined, inflammatory oils like vegetable, corn, or soybean oil. These oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids, which, in excess, can create chronic inflammation in the body. Inflammation is linked to skin issues like acne, puffiness, and premature aging, as well as serious conditions like heart disease and cognitive decline.

“Fried foods tend to have acrylamide and other toxins” in them, he notes.

3. Hot dogs/processed meats

Hot dogs and other processed meats are definitely foods to watch out for if you're trying to slow down aging and support overall health. Hot dogs often contain nitrates and nitrites, which are preservatives used to enhance color and extend shelf life. When consumed regularly, these compounds can lead to oxidative stress in the body, which accelerates aging and increases your risk of chronic diseases.

Processed meats are high in saturated fats and sodium, both of which are known to trigger inflammation. Chronic inflammation not only affects internal health but also shows up on the outside as dull skin, puffiness, and premature wrinkles.

Dr. Helman says these have “nitrosamines that can lead to cancer.”
