Supplements are often marketed as a natural and beneficial way to boost health and fill in nutritional gaps. However, not all of them are without risks. While many supplements can provide essential nutrients (and give you glowing skin!), some can cause harm when taken in excess or over a long period of time.

One of the most affected organs by supplement overuse is the liver, which plays an important role in metabolizing substances. It’s important to be aware of the ways that some supplements can damage the liver because cases of liver toxicity and injury from supplements are on the rise, according to studies.

To shed light on a few potentially dangerous options, we spoke to Dr. Rimas Geiga and checked out a recent study by several doctors who noted that green tea extract and turmeric supplements are the ones to be careful with. Read on to learn more.

1. Green Tea Extract

Green tea extract is renowned for its antioxidant properties, primarily due to its high concentrations of catechins like epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).

However, Dr. Geiga warns that, while there are many benefits to green tea, "high concentrations of catechins in green tea extract can induce oxidative stress in the liver, leading to hepatotoxicity." This oxidative stress may manifest as elevated liver enzymes and, in severe cases, acute hepatitis.

To mitigate these risks, it is recommended to limit intake to no more than 300 mg per day and consider brewed green tea as a safer alternative.

2. Turmeric

A recent study that was published in JAMA Network Open has revealed that drug-induced liver injury is on the rise in the U.S., with supplements like turmeric being a few of the common culprits. The east of accessing these supplements, either through a quick online purchase or over-the-counter availability, has significantly added to this increase.

Turmeric supplements are popular because of the active compound curcumin. Curcumin has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, the study claimed that if taken in excessive amounts, it could put you at risk of liver damage, kidney stones, and even liver failure.

The bottom line

Overall, while supplements like green tea extract and turmeric offer health benefits, it’s crucial to exercise caution when taking them in high doses. Both have been linked to potential liver issues, with green tea extract causing oxidative stress and turmeric posing risks of liver damage if overconsumed.

To protect your liver health, it’s best to stick to moderate doses and consider safer alternatives, such as brewed green tea or using turmeric in food rather than as a daily supplement. As always, consult with a healthcare professional before adding new supplements to your routine.
